As the new system provides clearer mechanisms to establish and defend authenticity, it prevents dilution by conflicting marks, and supports branding efforts that can elevate regional products in international markets. The 2022 GI Rules offer far more than a compliance framework – they create a platform for long-term eco - nomic, cultural and community development. Properly leveraged, GIs can elevate Philippine products by link - ing them to the cultural identity, traditional practices and natural qualities of their places of origin. As the IPOPHL has acknowledged, the system is expected to “benefit most the agricultural and handicraft sec - tors and promote traditional and indigenous Philip - pine products”. By formalising and protecting their geographical identity, these products can command premium value, promote tourism, support sustain - able agricultural and cultural practices, and improve export competitiveness. With adequate capacity- building and institutional support, GIs can empower local communities, strengthen rural economies and preserve cultural heritage, while enabling Philippine products to compete globally on the basis of authen - ticity and reputation.
