8.5 Regulation of Prescriptions and Dispensing by Pharmacies To ensure cost efficiency in pharmaceutical prescrib- ing and dispensing: • physicians are required to prescribe pharmaceuti- cals using the Non-Proprietary Name, which is the globally recognised name for the active substance; and • pharmacists are required to substitute branded pharmaceuticals with generic/biosimilar pharma- ceuticals, under certain conditions, unless the phy- sician writes on the prescription that the pharma- ceutical cannot be substituted for medical reasons.
