enced very heavy weather from the outer band of the typhoon, which caused her to flounder. Ships throughout the ages have been vulnerable to the weather. The ships in the coal trade between Indonesia and the Philippines may present an eco - logical threat to the sensitive ecology of the Sulu Sea. Indonesia lies south of the equator, and is outside the typhoon belt that extends from the Philippines and north through Taiwan up to Japan. With the increasing severity and size of typhoons, the Philippines’ environ - ment will face an increasing threat from that ferocious force of nature in the decades to come.

The Philippines is not standing still; in January 2025, the Philippines enacted the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act. The Philippines has one significant offshore gas field, named “Malampaya”, which is being redeveloped due to its declining pro - duction. Operations have been extended to 2039 to extract remaining reserves and explore new sources. The purposes of the new legislation are to establish the Philippine downstream natural gas industry and allow the Philippines to transition to a low-carbon future.
