Introduction to Taiwan’s Technology Industry Taiwan’s technology industry has played a pivotal role in both the domestic and global markets. The industry is diverse and encompasses several major sectors, contributing to Taiwan’s competitiveness and innova- tion. Semiconductors Taiwan’s semiconductor industry not only holds a lead- ing edge in production technology but also builds up a complete industry chain, which includes IC design, foundry, packaging and testing, and equipment man- ufacturing, forming a robust industrial cluster that supports the global supply of advanced technology products including: • 5G; • smartphones; • automative electronics; • cloud computing; • high-performance computing (HPC); Additionally, Taiwanese companies continuously strive in technological innovation, R&D investment and glob- al market expansion. Meanwhile, government policies also support the development of semiconductor-relat- ed industries. These factors have positioned Taiwan as a leader in the global semiconductor market. • artificial intelligence (AI); and • the internet of things (IoT).
In 2025, driven by the rising demand for AI and HPC, the semiconductor industry continued to experience significant growth. According to the report of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the output value of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is expected to exceed TWD6.5 trillion (approximately USD210.7 billion) in 2025 and exceed TWD7.1 trillion (approximately USD230.3 billion) in 2026. Further- more, in the second quarter of 2025, TSMC’s market share in the global wafer foundry sector reached 71%, maintaining its leading position. Electronics and information technology Electronics and information technology covers elec- tronic components, consumer electronics, commu- nication equipment and networking infrastructure. Taiwan’s electronics and information technology has earned international recognition for its high quality and reliability. Key players include Quanta, Wistron, Pegatron, Compal, and Inventec, etc. With the rapid development of the global technology industry, these companies are also actively transforming from tradi- tional OEM manufacturing to high value-added smart manufacturing, system integration and other fields. Optoelectronics This sector primarily covers display technologies such as LCD (liquid crystal display) and OLED (organic light-emitting diode), as well as solar photovoltaic technology. AU Optronics and Innolux are leading companies in the field. Driven by the net-zero carbon
