COSTA RICA Trends and Developments Contributed by: Germán Pochet Ballester, BioIuris
integrating civil society into decision-making, Costa Rica has laid the foundation for a model of demo- cratic and sustainable marine governance. However, maintaining these achievements requires sustained political will, institutional consistency and ongoing participation from all sectors involved. The lessons learned from this process underscore the importance of viewing marine resources not merely as economic assets but as shared components of the national natu- ral heritage.
Costa Rica’s future in marine policy will depend on its ability to balance ecological preservation with social equity and economic opportunity. Reaffirming a par- ticipatory and science-based approach to marine management will not only safeguard biodiversity but also strengthen the social fabric of coastal communi- ties and reinforce the country’s position as a global leader in environmental stewardship.
