It will not be mandatory to choose a double family name. However, if parents do not make a choice, a child will have the family name of the father or co-mother in the case of a marriage or registered partnership. For unmarried or unreg - istered partners, the child automatically has the surname of the birth mother. With this bill, a double family name can con - sist of up to two names and is written without a hyphen. The bill provides that this will be pos - sible for children born after 29 January 2019.
